Art Coordination by Cori Whatley

Fractal Art Gallery

When: Serendipity all the time

Let’s give a warm & BEAUTYful welcome to our Visual Artist Coordinator, @artbycorianne! “Through my paintings I have learned so much about myself I wasn’t aware of yet. Going in with the meditative approach, allows me to open up and discover new challenges. All of my work is influenced by my surroundings and experiences. Traveling, sharing my vision and connecting with others is something I’ve always strived to do. Since choosing this life path, I have had the opportunity to meet so many beautiful artistic souls along the way.” Cori will be live painting at #BITB19, and we just can’t wait to show you all the magic she has curated for all of us this year

Mama Spunion

Gallery/Mural

When: Serendipity all the time

GCat Lallier, (AKA Mama Spunion) is best known for her vibrantly colored paintings of the Divine Feminine in her many forms, and for her body art, which is constructed with signature “swooping” brush strokes. She also frequently creates mixed media pieces, and more recently, installation pieces. She works primarily with acrylic and oil paints, combined with hefty doses of love and light, to create psychedelic and surreal imagery that is delicious to the eye. She lives in her own little world and creates art to show others what that place looks like. A jack of all mediums, she creates jewelry, clothing, and decor as well.

My vision as an artist/writer is to allow viewers of all ages to look beyond the playfulness of my childlike imagery and stories in order to grasp the imperative nature of respecting boundaries.

Samantha Richmond

Live Painter

When: Serendipity all the time

Always following her heart, intuition and logic she creates using inspiration from the wondrous world and the infinite universe inside. Through flow arts, mixed media paintings, jewelry and article musings, she relays emotion, insight and wonder to others. She wants to show people trapped in life how the depths of imagination and creation can free one from the cages of their own bodies and minds.

Divine Grime

Live Painter

When: Serendipity all the time

Divine Grime  is a painter based in Oneonta, NY. He draws most of his inspiration from his favorite existential/metaphysic theories. When painting, he mixes philosophy with the macabre in order to reflect on existence and develop conversation with anyone who views his work. If not philosophy-related, he paints things that are seemingly meaningless, allowing his art to develop its own meaning as it progresses 🌀

When: Serendipity all the time

I am a self taught artist born in South Korea and raised in Maryland. I like to make visionary and psychedelic art and on occasion I like to draw portraits and other things. In my paintings I try to portray visions that I see in my mind. These visions come to me spontaneously, often when I am inspired by things that I see or hear while going about living everyday life. Entire paintings can come to my mind all at once or sometimes an idea, element, and pieces for a painting come to me in segments. I do my best to bring it from my mind into reality in a fun and interesting way

When: Serendipity all the time

“I’ve always had a passion for creating art. In school, doodling in the margins of my papers stimulated my mind more then paying attention to lectures. I’ve found, through my artistic journey, that art and the creative process opens the door for stimulating conversation and positive interactions. When I create, I hope to inspire others and create an environment for these meaningful interactions. Without them my passion for art wouldn’t be as vibrant and pure.”

Shibari 101: Intro to Japanese Rope Bondage w/ HelloKatie
5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Shibari (縛り) is a Japanese word that literally means "to tie decoratively."The word shibari came into common use in the West at some point in the 1990s to describe the bondage art Kinbaku. Kinbaku (緊縛) means "tight binding," while Kinbaku-bi (緊縛美) literally means "the beauty of tight binding." Kinbaku is a Japanese style of bondage or BDSM which involves tying a person up using simple yet visually intricate patterns, usually with several pieces of thin rope (often jute, hemp or linen and generally around 6 mm in diameter, but sometimes as small as 4 mm, and between 7–8 m long). In Japanese, this natural-fibre rope is known as asanawa (麻縄); the Japanese vocabulary does not make a distinction between hemp and jute. The allusion is to the use of hemp rope for restraining prisoners, as a symbol of power, in the same way that stocks or manacles are used in a Western BDSM context.

Dragon Spirit Arts: Vinyasa Fusion Flow w/ Gabrielle

This workshop explores the connection between Taoist & Yogic arts. The practice is a fusion of Vinyasa Yoga, Chi-kung, Kung-fu & T’ai Chi Chuan. This workshop will focus on performing a combine series of still postures, moving meditations and breathing that places importance on the synchronization of mind, body and spirit through Yogic techniques & Taoist Internal Arts practices. The art of “emptying the mind” will be observed to practice the yielding qualities of still meditation during “Yin” poses. Participants will explore the “Yin” restorative (sometimes still) postures that cultivate “Chi” to create more elasticity in the connective tissue (ligaments/tendons/etc.). The art of “engaging the body” will be also be explored to balance the practice with a connection between meditative movements during “Yang” posture flows. The “Yang” posture series is more vigorous, placing emphasis on cultivating & balancing “Chi”, while enhancing focus on strengthening the flexibility of muscle tissue. Thus, the art of “flowing with the Chi” (or pranic energy) will be investigated throughout the “spirit of the practice” to integrate balance between “Yin & Yang” aspects of poses & posture flows. The workshopsis accessible to a range of experience, challenging all practitioners from beginner to intermediate and even advanced students of the Taoist & Yogic Arts.

Rappé Workshop w/ Life Music Group

PLEASE DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL BEFORE ATTENDING THIS WORKSHOP

What is rappé snuff?

Rappé snuff (also spelled “rapé” and sometimes pronounced “ha-pay”) is a sacred and legal tobacco medicine that has been used for thousands of years in rituals and daily life by the indigenous tribes of the South American Amazon rainforest. In addition to varieties of tobacco, rappé often also contains ashes from medicinal or sacred trees. Production of rappé entails an experienced shaman cutting, drying, pounding, pulverizing, and sieving the tobacco and ashes over many days until a very fine dust is obtained. Production methods, choice of ashes, and exact compositions and ratios of ingredients are often closely held tribal secrets.

Why work with rappé?

Traditionally, indigenous tribes in Colombia, Peru, and Brazil have used rappé for rites, healings, spiritual ceremonies, and to support daily activities such as hunting, fishing, and harvests. These medicines are deeply integrated with their cultures and way of life. Over the past several years, modern society has begun receiving these medicines in ways that support our own spiritual healing. People have sought the help of rappé to realign and open chakras, support emotional grounding, release sickness on physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels, open-up the third eye, decalcify the pineal gland, clear mental confusion, release negative thoughts, remove psychic entities, connect to divine breath, and elevate connection with Spirit. Each rappé blend has its own unique vibrations, notes, qualities, subtleties, and very different effects one’s energetic field.

Cacao Ceremony w/ Life Music Group

PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN CUP

What is ceremonial cacao?

Ceremonial cacao is an ancient spiritual medicine prepared from the cacao bean, the seed of the sweet fruit of the cacao tree.

Ceremonial-grade cacao is made through a process of fermenting and then sun-drying or lightly toasting the beans. The beans are then de-husked and stone ground into a paste, nothing added, nothing removed. This is important as it means the beans natural fat remains aiding to balance its stimulating effects and make it easier for your body to absorb it over time.

This is cacao in its pure, traditional form, used by ancient civilizations and cultures in ceremonies for generations.

Why use ceremonial cacao?

Using ceremonial cacao either in a ceremony or as a part of a daily routine is neither intense nor a psychedelic experience, as other plant medicines can be. Rather, cacao gently nudges the heart chakra open, gifting benefits such as emotional embodiment and spiritual connection.

Cacao allows the drinker to quiet the mind and focus on good intentions either for the future or maybe just for the day, momentarily pausing that endless battle between head and heart!

In addition to its subtle entheogenic effects, cacao increases energy levels and concentration, illuminates a pathway to creativity, and balances the male and female energies within the body. Cacao also improves blood-flow and circulation.

Drinking cacao with intention enhances and deepens daily practices like meditation, yoga, and conscious dance.

Gurf

Gurf is the moniker of experimental trap producer Nick Gurfolino - a local to the Baltimore area and cofounder of Partica Artist Group. Along with fellow producer Runnit, Gurf started Partica near the end of 2018 as part label, part artist collective. The idea of it centered around building a community of boundary-pushing producers, releasing new music, doing production tutorials, and sharing sample packs all with the goal of elevating the status of other producers with similar styles. When asked about what inspires him in his music, he said "For me - music is solely about self-expression. So I draw inspiration from other people who are authentic and original, who are comfortable being themselves more than anything. Authenticity inspires me. So me trying to be myself within my music is where I start." Experience the 100% unique and hard-hitting sounds of Gurf when he takes over the Bass Barn at 8pm on Saturday. http://soundcloud.com/gurfmusic

Beat Kitty

Amanda Bociek, also known as the bass goddess Beat Kitty (@beatkittymusic ) creates a blend of downright twerkable rhythms and melodic textures comprised of instruments found across the globe. She has continued to improve her live sets over the last decade spanning performances from the beaches of Costa Rica to the deserts of the west coast, where she’s graced stages in Reno, Sante Fe, and the infamous Black Rock City. She currently resides in Brooklyn, and happens to also be a very accomplished tattoo artist. ✨ This badass lady will also be teaching a workshop at BITB, called Resonate, for femme identifying folk that explores the musical realm and depths of learning how to DJ.

Mr Jennings

When we talked about nature (since of course we talk about that... we are The Backyard after all), Conway told us that he believes “connecting with nature is one of the best ways to connect with yourself. I’ve driven cross country alone a few times, and one of my favorite parts is hiking or camping in the middle of nowhere. Death Valley is my absolute favorite. Nothing quite like climbing to the top of a 700 foot dune and not seeing another soul.”

beardthug

What are your interests/hobbies/skills/fun facts?* "Besides work? I think we’re both kinda trapped by music. Séamus works for Hennessey, Ronin, and manages beardthug, so he doesn’t even have time for anything else. I produce, mix, and master music all day as well as manage a residential building in NY. Plus I’m pretty lazy, so does binging Netflix and Hulu on my free time count as a hobby? I’m gonna say maybe.

Gangus
DRRTYWULVZ

Musically speaking, his biggest influences are electronic music pioneers from across the globe - Amon Tobin, Eskmo, Tipper, Cuplrate, to name just a few. In the last year, he finally began headlining smaller festivals and selling out local shows - things that he is incredibly proud of (with good reason) and that prove he is on the right path to take his music career to the next level. One of his highlights from the past year was hearing Tipper play his song at Burning Man on his 30th birthday.

Our Music is for all purposes, but primarily to share the groove and dance, inspire and motivate. Put it on in the background, watch it, channel it, study it, exude it, let it play you, sing and dance as couples, and words to sing to your kids. It takes a village to teach a child well and we love this community, planet, and time. :)" -Schway Soular Plexus

Solar Circuit

Playing is meditative and energizing to these four friends, in hopes of connecting and impacting others through music and passion. Bringing people of all backgrounds together, Solar Circuit creates music and events to remove the differences and create a joyful escape.

Humbalaya

Humbalaya is very much a collective. Our sound is a result of collaboration, and has grown over the two and a half years that we have been a band. At the beginning, we would cook together before every practice; each member would add his flavor to the meal, and then we would enter the practice space ready to add our flavor to the music. One of the most special places for our band is a small town in the hills of Western Connecticut - we'll call it Sherms. We hosted our own music and arts festival called "Shermfest" there in 2016 and 2017 - two Beauty In The Backyard artists, Of Tomorrow and Box Era, played in 2017! Sherms is one with nature, and has a magical energy that inspires creative output of all kinds. We look forward to connecting with nature and many friendly souls at Camp Ramblewood!!
